Domain B: Behavior Assessment
- ✓ 11% of the RBT exam
- ✓ 3 core tasks: preference, FBA, learner skills
- ✓ Instant feedback with detailed explanations
- ✓ Retake for fresh random questions
Domain B makes up 11% of the RBT exam and covers three core tasks: conducting preference assessments, assisting with functional behavioral assessments, and assisting with assessments of learner skills. Every question in this domain tests whether you know how to gather the information a BCBA needs to build an effective treatment plan.
- Identifying what items, activities, or events a client finds reinforcing. Four methods are tested: free-operant observation, single-stimulus, paired-stimulus (forced choice), and multiple-stimulus without replacement (MSWO).
- Assisting with functional behavioral assessments: interviews, direct observation, and environmental arrangement. You collect data and assist—you do not design the FBA.
- Assisting with assessments of learner skills: current repertoires, preferences, and barriers to learning.
Preference Assessments: The Four Methods You Need To Know
The RBT directly conducts preference assessments. The goal is to identify reinforcers—stimuli that increase behavior when delivered. An item can be preferred without actually functioning as a reinforcer; only actual behavior change tells you that.
Key exam point: preference does not equal reinforcer. An item must actually increase behavior to count as a reinforcer.
- Free-operant observation: Unrestricted access; you record what the client chooses and for how long. Good for continuous monitoring.
- Single-stimulus: Items presented one at a time; record approach, consumption, or rejection. Simple but slower.
- Paired-stimulus (forced choice): Every item paired with every other item. Client chooses one from each pair. Tallied as percentage of times chosen.
- MSWO: All items placed simultaneously. Client selects one; it is removed and the process repeats. Order of selection reveals preference strength.
Functional Behavioral Assessment: Your Role As An RBT
An FBA gathers information about the function of behavior. The four functions are captured by the acronym SEAT: Sensory, Escape, Attention, Tangible.
As an RBT, you assist with data collection and interviews. You do not design the FBA, choose the hypothesis, or interpret the function independently. That is the BCBA’s responsibility.
On the exam: if a question asks who designs the assessment or draws the conclusion, the answer is always the BCBA. The RBT assists and collects data.
Assisting With Assessments Of Learner Skills
Before the BCBA writes a treatment plan, they need to know what the client can already do. RBTs assist by administering assessments, recording responses, and noting prompt dependency. Accuracy here determines whether the client is taught at the right level.
How To Study Domain B Effectively
- Memorize the four preference-assessment methods and when to use each. MSWO is the most common exam answer because it is efficient and informative.
- Know the acronym SEAT for the four functions of behavior: Sensory, Escape, Attention, Tangible.
- Be clear on the RBT’s role in FBA: you collect data and assist, you do not design assessments or draw conclusions independently.
- Review the difference between preference and reinforcer. The exam tests this distinction repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the four preference assessment methods?
Free-operant observation, single-stimulus, paired-stimulus (forced choice), and multiple-stimulus without replacement (MSWO).
What does SEAT stand for in ABA?
Sensory, Escape, Attention, Tangible—the four functions of behavior.
Can an RBT design an FBA?
No. The RBT assists with data collection and interviews. The BCBA designs the assessment and determines function.
What is the difference between preference and reinforcer?
A preferred item is liked; a reinforcer actually increases behavior when delivered. Preference does not guarantee reinforcement.
How much of the exam is Domain B?
11%—roughly 9 or 10 questions out of 85.
