The RBT exam has 85 multiple-choice questions. Of those, 75 are scored and count toward your result. The remaining 10 are unscored pilot questions that the BACB uses to develop future exams — you will not know which ones they are while you test.
You have 90 minutes to complete all 85 questions. The exam is delivered at a Pearson VUE testing center on a computer.

What Do the Questions Look Like?
Almost every question on the RBT exam is scenario-based. Instead of asking you to define a term, the exam describes a real client situation and asks what the RBT should do.
A typical question might read: “During a session, a client begins engaging in mild self-injurious behavior that is already described in the behavior intervention plan. What should the RBT do first?”
Each question has four answer choices. Three of them are plausible, which is why understanding the reasoning behind each answer matters more than memorizing facts.
There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so you should never leave a question blank. If you are unsure, eliminate clearly wrong options and make your best guess from what remains.
How to Manage 85 Questions in 90 Minutes
The math works out to roughly 63 seconds per question. That is enough time to read carefully and choose confidently — but not enough to second-guess yourself on every question.
The most effective pacing strategy:
- Work through the exam question by question
- Answer anything you feel confident about immediately
- Flag questions that require more thought and move on
- Return to flagged questions after completing the rest
- In your final minutes, make sure every question has an answer
The Pearson VUE testing platform allows you to flag and review questions freely before you submit.
How Many Questions Do You Need to Get Right?
The RBT exam uses scaled scoring, not a simple percentage. The passing score is a scaled 200 out of 250.
In practical terms, you need to answer correctly on approximately 60 of the 75 scored questions to pass — roughly 80% accuracy on scored items.
The 10 pilot questions do not count toward your score in either direction. Since you cannot tell which questions are pilot questions, treat every question as if it counts.
How the Question Count Breaks Down by Domain
| Domain | Approximate Questions (of 75 scored) |
|---|---|
| Behavior Acquisition | ~24 |
| Behavior Reduction | ~13–14 |
| Data Collection and Graphing | ~10–11 |
| Ethics in ABA | ~12 |
| Documentation and Reporting | ~9 |
| Behavior Assessment | ~6 |
Behavior Acquisition alone accounts for nearly a third of your score. Study it first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions can I get wrong and still pass the RBT exam?
You can typically miss about 15 of the 75 scored questions and still pass, though the exact cut score uses scaled scoring rather than a simple raw percentage.
Are all 85 RBT exam questions graded?
No. Only 75 count toward your score. The other 10 are unscored pilot questions being tested for future use.
Can I go back and change answers on the RBT exam?
Yes. The Pearson VUE platform allows you to flag questions and review them before submitting your exam.
What is the RBT exam passing score?
A scaled score of 200 out of 250, which is approximately 80% accuracy on the 75 scored questions.
What happens if I do not finish in time?
The exam ends automatically when the 90 minutes expire. Any unanswered questions at that point count as incorrect, so always submit an answer before time runs out.
