The RBT® Competency Assessment is a live, hands-on demonstration of your skills, observed by a qualified assessor who scores each task as competent or not-yet-competent. It is a required step before you submit your certification application.
The assessment covers skills drawn from the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition, effective 2026). This guide explains what to expect and how to prepare.
How the Competency Assessment Works
- A BCBA or qualified assessor administers it, usually in a clinical setting.
- You may work with a real client or role-play with the assessor as the client.
- There is no strict time limit; most take one to three hours.
The Assessed Areas (3rd-Edition Names)
Area 1: Data Collection and Graphing
Prepare materials; implement continuous measurement (frequency, duration, latency, IRT); implement discontinuous measurement (partial/whole interval, momentary time sampling); collect permanent product data.
Area 2: Behavior Assessment
Conduct preference assessments (MSWO, paired stimulus, free operant) and assist with skill and functional assessments under the BCBA’s direction.
Area 3: Behavior Acquisition
Implement reinforcement, discrete-trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, chaining, prompting and fading, shaping, and discrimination training.
Area 4: Behavior Reduction
Implement antecedent interventions, differential reinforcement, extinction, and crisis/emergency procedures as written in the plan.
Area 5: Documentation and Reporting
Write objective session notes, report variables affecting progress, and communicate with your supervisor.
Area 6: Ethics
Demonstrate confidentiality, scope of practice, and professional conduct aligned with the BACB Ethics Code for RBTs.
How to Prepare
- Review the 3rd-edition task list and the procedures in your client’s plans.
- Practice each skill with a peer before the live assessment.
- Bring prepared data sheets and materials so you look ready.
