How To Become An RBT: Step-By-Step Requirements (2026)
Expert-written, aligned to the current BACB Task List. No login. No cost. Just results.
Becoming an RBT is one of the fastest, most direct routes into applied behavior analysis. No bachelor’s degree required. No clinical license. Just a high school diploma, a 40-hour training, a competency assessment, and an exam. If you want to work with autistic children, support families, and build a career in behavioral health — this is where many people start. This guide answers the questions people actually ask, in the order they ask them.
The RBT credential opens doors. Many technicians use it as a stepping stone toward BCaBA or BCBA certification. Others build long, stable careers as RBTs without moving up the credential ladder. Both paths are valid.

What Does An RBT Actually Do?
An RBT implements behavior-analytic services under supervision. That means running therapy sessions, collecting data on every trial, and following the behavior plan exactly as written. They do not design the plan, change it, or supervise other technicians. The BCBA designs; the RBT delivers.
RBTs work in clinics, schools, homes, and group homes. The clients are often autistic children or adults, but the skills apply more broadly — anyone receiving behavioral services.
Five Hard Requirements You Cannot Skip
1. High school diploma or equivalent. GED counts. No bachelor’s required. Many RBTs are college students, career-changers, or people entering healthcare for the first time.
2. 40-hour BACB-approved training. The training must cover the RBT Task List. Some employers provide this in-house. Others require you to take an external course. Make sure it is BACB-approved before paying — “RBT prep” courses that skip the 40-hour requirement are not qualifying.
3. Background check. Fingerprints and a criminal history check. Certain disqualifying offenses will block you. Check the BACB policy before applying if you have concerns.
4. Competency assessment with a qualified supervisor. This is where many candidates stall. Your supervisor must observe you demonstrating RBT skills and sign a competency form. The assessment is often folded into regular supervision, but if your supervisor is unavailable or inconsistent, ask explicitly.
5. Pass the RBT exam. 85 multiple-choice questions. Six domains. 90 minutes. Passing score is not published, but most candidates score around 70-80% on practice exams. Use our free practice exam or the section-wise quizzes before your test date.
Training Options: In-House, College, Or Online
Employer-sponsored training is the cheapest and most common path. Some clinics build the 40 hours into onboarding. External programs cost money — anywhere from $150 to $500 depending on whether you want just the hours or coaching with the exam. If you self-study, add the cost of exam prep books, domain quizzes, and at least one full mock exam.
Online training is fine if it is BACB-approved. Read the fine print. A course that says “RBT-ready” is not the same as a BACB-approved 40-hour course.

Salary And Job Market
Entry-level RBTs typically earn between $18 and $26 per hour, depending on state, setting, and whether the role is in-clinic, school-based, or in-home. California and New York pay more than the Midwest. Clinic-based RBTs often have steadier schedules than in-home positions, which can shift weekly.
The field is growing. Caseloads are high, turnover is high, and demand for qualified technicians outpaces supply. That is good for job availability — less good for workload sustainability. Ask prospective employers about caseload ratios and supervision quality before accepting an offer.
From RBT To BCBA
The RBT credential is a common entry point into the BCBA track. Many RBTs count their direct hours toward supervised fieldwork while completing a master’s degree. The progression usually looks like: RBT → case supervision hours → BCaBA → graduate coursework + BCBA fieldwork → BCBA exam.
If that progression interests you, start documenting your hours from Day 1 and ask your supervisor how their agency structures fieldwork. The sooner you know the requirements, the faster you can plan.
Common Mistakes That Slow You Down
Skipping the BACB-approved training requirement is the most expensive mistake. Studying 2nd Edition materials for a 3rd Edition exam is the second. Underestimating the ethics domain is the third. Domain F is 15% of the exam — that is more than 12 minutes of every 85-minute test. Give it proper study time.
Also: do not let the competency assessment slip. Many RBTs delay it until weeks before the exam window. That guarantees stress. Book it early — most supervisors are happy to conduct the assessment during a real session rather than a separate practice drill.
